Are discus fish shy when you first get them?

I bought 3 discus and put them in my tank. Its been a few days and all they do is stay grouped in the corner. I havn’t seen them eat or really gone out from that corner. Is this normal? What should I do about it?

They need time to get used to their new surroundings, just let them be and avoid too unnecessary movement aorund the tank. Also try feeding them live food like mosquito larvae or brine shrimps, like most fish they won’t be able to resist such a treat, and will treats like these will encourage them to explore their surrounding.

What other cichlids can live with convicts?

I have 2 convict cichlids in a 55 gallon heated aquarium, anybody know what else is compatible with them?

how big are they, if they are still small try a dragon goby or a needle fish. if they are larger try a pike or a small oscar. but only add one or two more fish to your tank cichlids grow, quickly, and too many fish will caus ethem to attack one another.

What kind of freshwater fish eats guppies and would happily live in a 10 gallon?

I have moved my guppies from a 10 gallon to a 50 gallon. I am breeding guppies to start nice strains; and the other guppies become food for convicts and oscars of friends and family. I now have a 10 gallon tank open and would like one to three fish in it that will eat guppies. What freshwater species do you recommend?

carp, rorch and tench all eat guppies they are fresh water fish to.

I hope that helps

Where is the very best place to buy aquarium supplies online, including shipping prices?

I’ve found lots of sites but don’t know which ones to trust and which ones would provide cheap to free shipping.
Big Als does have a nice selection but shipping is about 9 dollars and I’m not buying that much stuff. I’m really hoping for free shipping because money is tight right now and I just need some artificial plants.

Big Al’s Online. You really can’t beat Big Al’s.

how to make aquarium tank?

I want to make my own aquarium tank. I want to know where I can get glue for acrylic tank as well as glass tank.

Don’t expect to make a big tank and have it last, start with a small size, and test it out, learn how to do it correctly on a cheap tank!. Glasscages.com sells the plastic "frames" that go around the top and bottom on the tank, glass tanks use aquarium silicone to hold them together, and acrylic tanks use a type of plastic solder, its a solvent type liquid that melts the pieces into 1, home depot sells a small package useful for your test tank, its looks like a tube of superglue with a metal permanent marker (old style).

When preparing a saltwater aquarium, should I use sea salt from the grocery store or aquarium sea salt?

I have sea salt purchased from the grocery store and am preparing a saltwater aquarium. Should I purchase specialized sea salt or is the grocery-store sea salt fine for the fish?

No you cannot use sea salt purchased in the grocery store. You need ones like the synthetic instant ocean or real sea salt like red sea salt.

You need specific salt not grocery store salt. Ocean salt fore fish is designed for fish not to season them for human consumption.

What aquarium plants need only low light?

I am wanting to place a few live plants in my newer aquarium but don’t really want to buy a stronger light. I am just wondering if there are plants that will do ok in lower light. I have a 20 gallon tank and it came with an overhead flourescent light that is only 15 watts. Any plants that would be ok with that lighting?

It is going to be tought to get anything to grow with such a low light level. Anubias, java fern, most mosses, cryptocoryne walkerii and wendtii should be able to make it. You could probably get some floating plants to grow, duckweed, frogbit, etc.

Are wire cages or aquariums better for Syrian hamsters?

Which is the better housing option for a Syrian hamster, a wire cage w plastic bin or glass aquarium? So far, I know that wire cages can spread the litter around, but aquariums can be hard to attach stuff to. Please help me out with this and tell what are the pros and cons of each! Thank you so much.

I vote for the bin cage. I’ve had a wire and aquarium cage before and In my opinion, the bin is the best ;)

The Wire cage has good ventilation, however, if you have an pet who likes to chew on things (which covers most to all hamsters and gerbils) they will target and attack the wire cage bars with no mercy. Even if you don’t mind the noise, it’s not good for the pet because excessive chewing on the bars can misalign teeth and cause health problems that range from the inability to eat, to death, by a tooth puncturing the brain.

The Aquarium cage is a fairly good cage if you have a good screen/wired top that fastens securely to the tank. An insecure wired top was my main issue with the Aquarium cage because I had the most escapes from this cage. If you have a larger tank, like a 20 gallon, it’s a bit heavy to clean (especially hard to get the remaining bedding, dust, and pee once it’s decided to lodge into a corner).

I’m currently using the Bin cage, which you can actually adapt to fit your needs. It won’t get chewed through if you keep any holes high enough so your pet can’t reach it. I incorporated the wired top I used for the aquarium for ventilation on the lid of the bin. the water bottle nozzle goes through a hole that fits so snug that teeth cannot widen it. You can even make a hole to fit connecting habitrail or crittertrail tubes. Best of all, it’s light, large, cheap, and the corners are rounded for easy cleaning. It’s also a nice, creative challenge for the do-it-yourself people.

EDIT:
If you clean the cage as often as you should, there should be no more mould, bacteria, or smells as you would get in a Wire cage. People are concerned about there no being enough ventilation in an Aquarium cage or Bin cage, but think of the little Habitrail dens our hamsters/gerbils sleep in (or other similar plastic hide-outs) that have only a few small holes drilled into them.

How can i get discus to breed?

I have a 55 gallon tank with 2 red turquoise discus which are still within 2 inches of size. Im looking to get 2 more discus but of a different breed. My questions are….
Can two different type of discus interbreed?
How can i increase the chances of any of my discus to breed?
Should i have a total of 5 discus in the 55 gallon tank or is 4 good enough room wise?

2" is still not that close to maturity, so until they get a couple (if not few) inches bigger, you don’t even need to worry about it. Then you run into the problem of getting a pair. These fish choose their mates themselves. Try as you might, you cannot force them to pair up. Starting with 5 or 6 juveniles is best, as they can grow up together and pair off on their own. As they grow, pick out the weaker ones, as they will likely not be selected by a potential mate anyway. Once you get a pair, it’s a waiting game. Keep the water warm (about 84-85*) and relatively soft. Provide them with plenty of vertical surfaces (wood, rock, pots) and attempt to induce spawning by dropping the temperature a couple degrees.

5 juvenile Discus in a 55 isn’t a problem, but it won’t work as adults. A pair or, if you’re lucky, two pairs is really about the max I’d try. Discus of different strains can breed together, but generally it isn’t desirable. You’ll just end up making worthless muts unless you’ve got plenty of time to perfect it into something new through generations of selective breeding (easier said than done).
