Is it ok to put a ghost shrimp, aquarium frog,or snail in a tank with A BETTA? Is it safe for both creatures?

I hear that the bettas will eat ghost shrimp but how will the fish react with a small aquarium tank frog or a snail? My betta "Albus" is very tempramental and lives in a one gallon aquarium. I need to know before I test his pride and limits before I end up killing the poor thing. Please help me!!!!!

in general, you won’t want to mix any bullet-shaped fish, especially those with fancy fins, with a male betta. if your fish seems very aggressive (like flares when you put your hand near the tank, or flares at a plant or something) you probably shouldn’t mix the betta with any other animal.

if your betta is fairly lazy, as many are, there shouldn’t be a problem introducing a snail (they have their own protection, too), or a frog such as an african diving frog. consider the size of the ghost shrimp relative to the betta… could he perceive it as food? i don’t think he’d be territorial with a shrimp but he might try to eat it.

i don’t think the other animals would attack your betta though.

About how much does it cost to get a saltwater aquarium?

I really want a saltwater aquarium but I dont know if I can afford it. if you can, please give me an estimate on what it would cost to get one.

for a small tank – 20G or so, it will cost you in the neighborhood of $1000, depending on what equipment you get, whether you make your own water or buy it from a local store, etc.

What is a good substitute for an aquarium cover?

I have a 10 gallon aquarium on my desk. My desk already has a Florescent light so I don’t want to shell out the money to buy a Aquarium cover + florescent light. What is a good replacement for an aquarium cover? I don’t think I want the terrarium covers because they’re wire screens- and they let dust through. Any suggestion?

I made one from cardboard and had it laminated. I put bits of foam about .5mm thick on the sides of the inside of it to keep it from sliding off the top of the tank.

Can you use a circular fluorescent bulb found inside those fake motion aquariums for a real aquarium?

I was wondering if you can use a circular fluorescent bulb found inside those fake motion aquariums for a real aquarium/terrarium setting with live plants?
The side of the box says it’s 120V/9.5W, but i believe the actually bulb is 5W.

sure as long as you have the correct connection, no problem. The aquarium bulbs are made exactly the same.

Back To Nature Guppy Tank (Guppies)

A quick video of my guppy tank as it is at the moment. Its a 70 litre ‘Brillux Ultrabright’ aquarium with 2x T8 bulbs. The tank is fitted with a ‘Back to Nature Amazonas’ 3D background which has been modified to take the fittings for my external Fluval 205 filtration system and a heater as well. There are just over 20 adult guppies, and lots of baby ones, 3 ottocinclus and a juvenile bristle nose plec hiding somewhere! Sorry about the reflections, but its the best I could do in the day time!

A 2 ton, 15 foot Great White barrels into my cage and brakes through the bars… Patrick Walsh – Filming
Paul Damgaard – Avoiding Sharks Mouth
CC – The Shark

“On November 4th we had an incident that was pretty darned exciting. CC, or Cut Caudal, one of our regular sharks, accidentally ran into one of the main cages on the Searcher. CC came up nearly vertical about 20 feet away from the cage and grabbed one of the hang baits, which he is known to do on a regular basis. However, on this particular day he swam right into the portside cage’s viewing window. As CC took the bait he instinctively rolled his eyes back, couldn’t see where he was going and accidentally swam directly into the viewing window. CC’s entire head went inside the cage and he was stopped just short of his pectoral fins. Well, we all know that white sharks have no reverse and CC was too far in to turn around. He tried to turn, but he could not quite get his snout to clear the corner. He rolled on his side and began to thrash up and down trying to free himself. Being a rather large white shark he just ended up making the opening bigger by simply removing the front of the cage so he could get out of the cage. CC literally removed all the lower front vertical bars and the horizontal bar that connects all of the vertical bars to the main frame of the front cage panel and then swam away. What was amazing is that it took only about 10 seconds to do this. What was even more amazing was that there were 2 divers in the cage at the time and they thought that this was the coolest thing they had ever experienced and walked away completely unscathed. The divers also said that CC was just fine too!

We were all very relieved that no one was injured. We were also pleased that our divers listened to the safety briefing prior to diving and followed the instructions and evacuated the cage when this incident occurred. One diver utilized the emergency escape hatch and somehow managed to film the entire event. We learned something from this and we will take appropriate measures to prevent this from happening again.

When we said, “You can get face-to-face with the ultimate predator” this is not what we had in mind!

The Searcher’s cages are 6 years old now and we have learned a great deal since we first built them. We are going to take this opportunity to design and build new state-of-the-art cages that will be safer and stronger. We will unveil the new cages in spring 2008.” Great White Shark Adventures
