what is a good blog for teenagers to discus issues?

I an sick and tired of adults shutting me up when i try to say what I think. I have opinions to, and i want to find a blog where i can say and discus them.

These are my favourite teenage blogs.

What kind of cichlids for a 29 gallon tank?

Hello, I had some other fish before but unfortunately a disease ended that. I’ve since cleaned the tank and done a huge water change. Assuming my chemistry levels are alright (I’m testing them this afternoon) what kind of cichlids would be recommended? I’ve heard firemouths could work nicely in there.
Oh, and what kinds of dithers should I put in there? I’m trying to stay away from a super-aggressive tank because its so small. Thanks!

OK, your chemistry regarding ammonia and nitrite is one thing, but don’t worry about ph and such, it’s a waste of time – fish are highly tolerent of this.

Basically for a 29 gallon tank you want fish that will get to no more then 4 or 5 inches or so, since the idea is to give them a good home, not cram them in with no room to live. Considering how active cichlids tend to be, smaller is better.

Firemouths will work and are on the larger end of the scale.

Keyhole cichlids are fantastic because they are very mild and open up many options for you regarding tankmates.

Rams, Apistogramma and Kribensis are all dwarf cichlids which will do very well in your tank. Kribensis tend to be more aggressive than the others.

Because it is a tall tank, a pair of Angels could work too.

All of the above fish are monogomous, meaning you should learn how to establish a proper pair (usually you start off with extra fish to ensure males and females)

Cichlids are robust, and shyness wears off quickly. You don’t need dither fish, so only add other tankmates if you actually want them as part of the setup, and keep in mind with cichlids it’s always a risk.

African cichlids you must be careful with. They generally need bigger tanks, even the small kinds, and with a few exceptions like shell dwellers and a few Tanganyikan species, are not good for yours. The cichlids from Malawi are not monogomous, should be kept in numbers with their own kind, and even the smallest types should have bigger tanks due to very high activity and usually high aggression.

Research cichlids as much as you can before jumping into it. www.cichlid-forum.com is a great place to start.

How old till fry can be with adult guppies?

When I have guppy fry I’m planning on having them in a fish bowl for as little time as possible. Would two weeks be enough time before putting the other two adult female guppies with them? One week even? I would like the majority of them to survive.

This picture is of a breeding separator. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v415/Okiimiru/April2nd2009004-1.jpg You put the pregnant female in it when she is about to give birth, and she has her babies inside it. It floats in the tank. When the babies are born, they drop through a separating slot in the bottom and are safe from being eaten from their mother. Then you remove her once she is done giving birth and let the fry grow up in there.

The advantages of raising the fry in a breeding separator instead of in a fish bowl are:
1. A breeding separator shares the same water as your large aquarium, meaning that the fry never have to deal with ammonia buildup from their food, are at lower risk for fungus because the water is not stagnant, and grow faster because the water is heated.
2. In small containers, it is easier for the fry to find their food. Releasing the fry immediately after birth into a large tank is unwise because fry don’t yet know what is edible and what is not. By placing them in a small container with lots of food, they are able to use their mouths for the first time and will fill their tiny bellies. Food is harder to find in large tanks, there’s longer to swim between bites, and the buildup of all that uneaten food often causes fungus.

The picture above is really the best way to raise fry because they have a place to hide (the green stuff is flame moss), food readily available, and cannot be eaten by larger fish. They also have zero ppm ammonia, heated water, and good oxygen levels. It’s and ideal way to raise tiny newborn fry.

If you raise them in the breeding separator where they will eat frequently and not have to swim against a strong current, then they will be ready to put in the main tank with their parents within two weeks. You’ll know they’re ready to put in the main tank when they are too large to fit inside their parent’s mouths. Release one or two fry when you think that they are all ready and then watch what happens to those "test" fry. They will hopefully not get eaten. Then you can release the rest of your fry.
Growth is slower after release into the main tank because they have to swim against the current and food is farther between bits.

How do you prepare a shark fillet?

I bought a shark fillet at the grocery store at the request of my 7 year old son and have no idea how to prepare it, any ideas? What spices to use, how to cook it, such as oven or broiler, what temps, and how long to cook it. any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Shark is similar to swordfish–a dense and flavorful ‘meaty’ kind of fish that you’ll want to keep simple and cook so it retains moisture–overcooked, it can be rather dry. My suggestion is to flour it lightly and sautee gently in margarine or butter, seasoning it as it cooks with a little squeeze of lemon juice & salt. It also broils well [similar to a beef filet in that regard] and can be seasoned by a little glazing of marg or butter, lemon juice, salt – and some parsley flakes when you serve it. Depending on thickness of filet, it shouldn’t take long at all. As with all fish, it’s done when you can flake it apart with a fork [testing it, right?]. We like a few capers in with the lemon juice, too. The butter adds moisture, the lemon juice adds ‘tang’, the capers add a little zip. A side dish of some creamy potato thing, some green peas, a few tomato slices… Shark, like swordfish, is the "steak of the sea" and has about the same requirements as a steak dinner would. Bon appetit!

How much weight can a 20 gallon fish tank/aquarium hold?

We’re putting some large rocks in our fish tank and we’re a bit worried about the added weight. Does anyone know how much weight a fish tank that size is equipped to support?

i would have thought that if the base is well supported all over its area then it shouuld hold whatever weight you put in it. just dont rest ornaments against the sides and make sure the stand that the tank is on is strong enough to hold all the weight.

how many power heads are needed in a 4 foot saltwater aquarium?

i read that the only man made filteration you neeed in saltwater aquarium is a protein skimmer is this true

I disagree with a skimmer being the only "filtration" needed. Skimmers removed very fine particles and dissolved proteins in the water before they decompose into ammonia, but they aren’t capable of removing larger particles. Granted, you could wait and and remove these with a siphon whenever you do your water changes, but why wait that long?

As far as the number of powerheads, that can vary with the amount and placement of the live rock in your tank, and if you’re trying to simulate natural currents. If you keep only fish and little live rock, you may be able to get by without any. If you want a reef tank, I would plan on at least 1 (facing the outflow of your filter/skimmer) although two would be better.

If you have a lot of live rock and have "dead areas" with little water movement, or you want to put the powerheads on a timer and simulate the changing direction of the tides during the course of a day, three (or more) might be needed.

How can you get rid of bleach stains on plastic aquariums?

when i was young i tried to clean my plastic aquarium with bleach but it turned it all white. is there any way to get rid of the bleach on it?

* i didn’t use the aquarium for fish, so don’t worry, i didn’t poison anything

Bleach did not leave a stain, it pulled the dye from the plastic. No, there’s no way to fix it.
