I love your tank! I want to have plants but can’t seem to get them to grow then turn yellow then brown and died before ya know it.I just bought a piece of driftwood and well once again i stink at this because it just floats. And for those on here that i see with sand. How do you do that? I mean how do you clean that?

Thanks! I’m rather new to this myself, but based on the above I think the gourami should be fine. In fact the black tetras I have tend to be fin nippers too but don’t bother the gourami. The dwarf gourami though do get to be 3 or 4″ but should be fine in a 36 (the ones in the my vid are definitely at least 3″.) I just recently added 2 flying foxes as well, so far OK with them as well though they’ll sometimes chase a black neon tetra away once in a while.

    Will a dwarf …
Will a dwarf gourami survive in a 36 gallon tank with 7 tiger barbs, a few zebra danios and a flying fox? My barbs swim in a pack and don not notice the other fish. The barbs (listed as semi agressive) and a dwarf gourami (community) both grow to 2″.
Very nice tank and plant arrangment by the way!

I started with a 10gal and no live plants. I gradually added a few to that. I made a conscious decision when I “upgraded” I was going fully planted. It’s never too late to add to your current setup.

At the store in Bolingbrook, IL which is a southwest suburb of Chicago.

I’ve heard of “The Fish Place” … I’ll have to remember to check them out online.

Woah that’s where I go to get my fish! (Aquarium Adventure) Which one do you go to? I’m from Long Island. It’s a great store for fish.

When I’m in college, I go this place called…The Fish Place lol. The Fish Place is by far the best place I’ve ever been to to get fish. They have literally EVERY fish you can imagine, super healthy for amazing prices. I wish it was by my house when I’m not at college.

I have to go with Jared here. Get a good book and subscribe to a magazine to gather knowledge and ask lots of questions at the fish store. I only started this year with a 10gal, but I got a “starter” book, did a lot of internet research and actually subscribe to 3 mags now. When I got the 10 I didn’t realize how much was involved (though I learned enough to know it took more than throwing some fish into a box with water.)

I hope to do a salt too, but not until next year (or later).

    I shop at a place …
I shop at a place called Aquarium Adventure, but only 5 of those exist, they’re affiliated with Petland. I’ve bought fish mainly from there but also Petland and a mom&pop shop local to me. I’ve never tried to order fish mail order but you could consider that.

Also, depending on who your local store is, they could possibly “special order” a fish if you knew what you were looking for and they were willing to do that. I find locally that Petsmart and Petco seem to have a more limited selection.

where do you get your fish from? i can olny find common fish here

    Aesir, I wouldn’t …
Aesir, I wouldn’t do a salt water setup at all right now if I were you. You need to do A LOT of research seeing as how you don’t take good care of freshwater fish. Like Jim said you need dechlorinator for the tap, you need to have a fully cycled tank and you need to keep fish in a much larger tank…not a bowl.

Fish keeping is a very rewarding hobby but it requires a lot of work and knowledge.

  14. JaredK511 says:

    Yeah, the cories …
Yeah, the cories stick together because they are the only two of their kind. If you added 4 of each species I bet they would separate and stick to their own species. But all of their activity would change drastically! I’ve had plenty of groups of cories/loaches of at least 6 and they totally love each others company.

Yes, I have quite a few tanks. I have a 10 gallon in my apartment, a 20 long at home and a 29 gallon at home as well. (I’m a college student).

Ac2ly they’re dead.. And now im planning to have a lion fish reef on our 70gallon aquarium?? any guide??

  16. spockster59 says:

    There could be lots …
There could be lots of things. Do you have a test kit for pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, etc? Second, yes, generally distilled water is NOT a good idea for fresh water fish. You need the minerals and nutrients that come out of the tap. Assuming your tap water is chlorinated, you’ll also need a dechlorinator like Prime.

How long have you had your tank? Was it fully cycled?

Get the fish better first then after that worry about the plants.

Ow so their dying.. where can i buy fertilizer or what do it like?? and, after cleaning my fish bowl last night my fish are just sort of like.. ahmm always at the buttom of the bowl and seems like their getting weak but they swin and just fall instantly its been two days so i can say they arent dying, and also they dont eat. My guess is that because ive been using distilled water then chan ged it to faucet water is that possible?? are they sick or??

  18. spockster59 says:

    Jared, thanks for …
Jared, thanks for the comments. Been thinking about a few more cories, but really, the albino and panda are buddies [ever since I had them in my starter 10gallon] :) Just working on some of the hair (actually black beard) algae I’ve got going now.

At this point though I’ll probably hold on the loaches. I’ve got three and they do hang out more than is evident in this vid.

Do you have a tank? Just curious.

Again, thanks for the comments, they’re welcome!

    You use a gravel …
You use a gravel vac to clean the gravel. For sand you can just hover the vac gently over the sand and it will suck up all the crap.

Your plants are dying. They probably don’t have adequate resources to live. They need light, CO2, ferts, etc to prosper.

  20. JaredK511 says:

    Hey, you have a …
Hey, you have a gorgeous tank! I would just recommend that you up the schools of the loaches and cories seeing as how they love company. You would see them much happier if you do.

    How do you clean …
How do you clean the gravel/sand?? And why does my aquarium’s live plants always turns color brown as if its drying or something?? please answer thanks
