My 125 Gallon turtle tank. Home made canopy, overflow and wet dry bucket trickle filter system, low maintenance and very clean. two red eared slider turtles with 5 gold fish and 5 minnows. Built entire system for about $400, got tank and stand almost free off craigs list, had to reenforce stand and paint black to match decor. Rocks I got from construction left overs (free). They love their new basking area and large area to swim around. Tank is undersized by 15 – 25 gallons of water since its 10 gal for every inch of turle so next tank will need to be bigger once they grow a bit more.

you mentioned you have the 3/4 in. pvc cross railed under the rocks to keep detritus from the bottom of the tank. what do you mean by cross railed, and how is it keeping the detritus from the bottom of the tank. Very nice setup, do you need to do water changes? or just add due to evaporation?

right on man, sounds like ya have a pretty good filtering system figured out.
This will keep cost …
This will keep cost down to filter media only and I plan on putting in a 4 tier fine catch system that can be washed and reused multiiple time so expect yearly cost to go down to the range of $5-$10 a year per filtration. My refrium will also house live plants and fish to bait costs should go down as well. Hoping to have costs isolated to new UVb and heat bulbs and water yearly. Good luck and thanks for the comments.
I also have live …
I also have live bacteria in my filter which nutralizes all amonia from the water. So the only cost I have is: I buy a huge roll of filter media offline for $30 (lasts about 16 months) and I buy my carbon in bulk from local water filtration distributer for about $45(lasts about 16 months as well) and I use my wifes old pantyhoses to hold the carbon. So my yearly cost for filter is about $50 a year. My next design I plan on having a much much larger filter but only a refrium and no carbon.
I only change my …
I only change my filter once every other week on average and add a gallon a day. I have an auto fill float so it auto adds a gallon a day of filtered fresh water. So I can be gone for 2 weeks and they really do not need much. I usually have a friend throw some veggies/fruit in with the bait already in there once or twice if gone that long so works very well. Per the filter setup mine cost about $12 to build versus hundreds for a canister.
It could be, not …
It could be, not all are large. If it looks good and active and also the shell is fairly flat then your ok. If the SHell is starting to dome up then that is very bad and is caused by improper lighting, like not having a UVB bulb and also lack of proper diet (lacking calcium and other nutrients). All and all i would expect a year old RES to be around 3 or 4 inches long minimum if not closer to 5-6. Good luck
if you can afford …
if you can afford it you should get a Fluval 405 canister filter (or the FX5). i have a fluval 405 and 5 turtles, in more water then you have there and i get 6 months without doing anything but adding water. I feed my turtles in there tank. that’s about 6 months with crystal clear water and no maintance. (i put in a full box of amonia remover, 3 bags that didn’t come with the filter) but i’d cleaned the filter and all media and am on round 2 with the same media.
I actually bought 2 …
I actually bought 2 dozen bait minnows and most of them died and i was away. when i got back you couldn’t see a thing in the water. once again, i had to leave right away so i took the dead minnows out and now 3 or 4 days later the water is almost back to crystal clear. I know you put a lot of work into your tank and it is awsome. just though i’d let ya know in case you wanted to save a butt load of your time.
i have a one year …
i have a one year old turtle and it’s only about 2 inches long. is that a normal length for my turtle? and where did you get those flat rocks?

NICE TANK! what kind of rock is your basking area made out of???
Ah.. I …
Ah.. I misunderstood. I keep the water balanced pretty well (very easy because of filter and plants) so it doesnt build up much on the glass. Every once in a while (month or two) i go in with paper towel and clean the glass with fish safe glass cleaner to polish it up but its not bad. I like the view of obove water line so even if it got dirtier I wouldnt mind.
