In addition to my job, I want to start a business cleaning aquariums, and grooming dogs and cats. I want to be prepared to deal with just about anything.
Feed them first. They are pretty skittish fish, so they aren’t much to worry about when they aren’t hungry. If you want, you could use a divider in the tank and clean one half at a time.
don’t stick your hand in it!

Put the piranhas in a temporary "holding" tank while you clean their aquarium. Use a net for transfer!
Similar procedure should be followed with ALL fish!

First of all do not think that cleaning a tank of piranhas is as easy as grooming dogs and cats. Secondly piranhas are more nervous in a tank than they are in a lake. Anything you put in it’s home will make them splash about frantically. Most of the dirt will be taken in by the box filter so you could a syphon to clean the grit. With baby ones about 1 inch it is not much trouble to syphon out as long as you dont startle them. If they are about 5-6 inches big and you decide to move them to another tank, you must use the biggest net possible and is quite strong with a deep net. I once had a 6 inch piranha that I wanted to move to another tank but it wriggled so much that it jumped right out of the net and fell on the carpet. I had to pick it up with my hand and put it straight back in the water to wash any dirt off.
All in all if you want to clean a piranha tank…do it under supervision.

piranha are a lot more timid than people who’ve seen one too many horror movies will tell you
as long as they aren’t starving they won’t attack your hand much les your whole arm…
i’d personally be more worried about a breeding pair of jaguar cichlids or, god forbid, a pair of dovii
