ow do you replace a side of a glass aquarium with acrylic?

Question by joe_hoble: ow do you replace a side of a glass aquarium with acrylic?
I have a glass 110 gallon aquarium that has the supported side broken. The piece measures 60×21.5×3/8. Is there anyway to bond a piece of acrylic instead of glass that will with stand the water and pressure?

You can use acrylic, but you really shouldn’t mix glass and acrylic on the same tank. The differences in expansion rates, thicknesses, etc will make problems. Best you replace the broken glass with the like thickness as the original. Pure silicon is the sealant of choice for a glass tank. For a large project like yours, look in the hardware section of a department store or home improvement stored for caulking tube sized containers of pure silicon sealant, just be sure it says it’s safe for aquariums. One brand I can recommend is GE which is available at Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes.MM

Have you ever used a kit to get acrylic tank scratches out?

Question by Euronymous: Have you ever used a kit to get acrylic tank scratches out?
I have an acrylic aquarium with some scratches from the previous owners corals. I have freshwater fish in it now, and its filled up. I can visibly see the scratches when I’m looking at the tank and it stresses me away rather then making me relax and happy. How does an acrylic tank scratch remover work? Do I have to totally drain the water to do it? Does it involve chemicals? Or can I use it while the tank is fully loaded, so to speak. Thanks!

How do I clean a hazy acrylic aquarium?

Question by OzStar: How do I clean a hazy acrylic aquarium?
My aquarium looked great with fish, water & all. But I sold the fish and poured out the water. The dry tank is hazy. I tried cleaning with a mix of vinegar & distilled water. It’s helped, but not much. I tried Tetra Aquarium Wipes. Those dry with a weird residue. One site suggests bleach, but I’m not so sure about that because I do desire to sell this to someone to put fish into. This is weird. The aquarium was clear & beautiful when it had water in it.So, how do I get this clear? Will bleach help without hurting future residents??

bleach will work as long as you rinse it a lot with really hot water and salt.. ive had that before… getting an aquarium out of our shed after it was in that dump for over 3 years but that should work pretty swell and if you get it clean but its still a little cloudy use windex on the inside and out just make sure that the hazyness isnt scratches (its probably not but just to be safe). dont be scared to use any kind of chemicals you consider will work just remember to rinse and rinse and rinse with warm/hot water good luck ^_^

Glass or acrylic aquariums? Pros and cons please?

Question by Sam: Glass or acrylic aquariums? Pros and cons please?

Answer by Tommy-Lee
I would definatly recommended Glass aquariums. They do am more but they look much better and are much more durable. They are also less likely to scratch when cleaning algae like acrylic aquariums do. Also glass aquariums do not “age” the way that acrylic aquariums do. Glass tanks remain clear for life. I would definately recommended that you invest in a glass tank and aim to get the biggest tank you can afford, this allows more room for error in water conditions and will increase your choice of fish. Stay away from round bowls.

Aquarium sealant (silicon sealant in a tube hardware bin). Most fish stores sell it.You will have to remove the old sealant and clean the glazed. With the tank made conjointly (tied up, taped up what ever you can find that fits and works) Run a bead of new sealant and using your finger squish the sealant into the corner forming a smooth seal up the aquarium. Don’t be shy with the sealant. It is better to have a little too much than not enough.Check for the curing time on the directions. The true test will be when you begin to fill it up.
