Why You Need a Chiller for Your Aquarium

If you know people who ain aquariums or if you have been looking to placed up your ain aquarium then you are likely already conversant with the words aquarium chiller. But you may not cognize why you involve one or yet what they are used for. So permit me to explicate and hopefully assist you larn why you take a chiller for your aquarium.

Heat is a factor that can adversely touch both humans and animals and if you ain an aquarium you must be good cognizant that each type of fish needs to inhabit in a temperature that mimics their instinctive habitat. Both freshwater and saltwater fish cannot inhabit in temperatures that are warmer than the normal temperature for their species. Cold water fish particularly have a difficult time surviving in a lovesome aquarium water.

If the water is too warm then this can lead to the death of your fish which is something all aquarium owners want to avoid. If you have a saltwater aquarium then it is crucial for you to remember that the margin for error is even less in a saltwater aquarium. Even if the temperature of the water goes up by one or two degrees this can be fatal for the health of your fish. Reef aquariums and invertebrate setups in particular are very delicate and the organisms cannot withstand warmer water than usual since these organisms are very delicate.

]]>
Both freshwater and saltwater aquariums require dissolved oxygen in the water in order to allow the fish to breathe without any problems. Saltwater aquariums in particular contain lesser dissolved oxygen as compared to freshwater and losing more dissolved oxygen will not be good for the fish. Insufficient dissolved oxygen can cause fish to gasp for air and the end result may be tragic. The main cause for insufficient dissolved oxygen in an aquarium is higher temperatures of water which cause the dissolved oxygen from the water to be let out into the air faster which causes a lack of dissolved oxygen.

Some people try running an air conditioner to help reduce the temperature of the aquarium water. This practice is not usually successful since the temperature has to be reduced every day for 24 hours till the hot season is over, and it is not practical and in some cases even possible to run an air conditioner for such long periods of time.

Aquarium chillers are the best option if you want to invest in equipment that will help you cool the temperature of the aquarium water and help you protect your precious and expensive fish or invertebrates. Aquarium chillers can also help you maintain sufficient amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water as they cool down the water temperature to the desired temperature.

Maintain Tank Temperature With A Fish Tank Chiller

As the name suggests, fish tank chillers are planned to maintain the water in your fish tank nerveless in warmer climates. They are chiefly used in marine aquariums where fish incline to be highly sensible to temperature although fancy goldfish in tropic climes likewise benefit from the use of a fish tank chiller. An extra benefit is that cooler water has a greater capacity to make resolved oxygen thence avoiding issues with low-toned levels of oxygen in your aquarium.

When do you need the fish tank chiller?

A fish tank chiller will be required when you run an aquarium with fish that prefer to live in cold water only. Aquarium chillers will maintain the water temperature you wanting. Changing the temperature is something you need to do yourself, manually.

An alternative to a chiller is to run an air conditioning unit in the room that contains the aquarium, however running the air conditioner just to keep the fish tank water at the desired temperature can be a very expensive option. And even though a fish tank chiller may seem like an expensive item it will soon pay for itself if you are not running the air conditioner day – especially if you are not home during the day or you are on vacation.

]]>
Another chiller alternative is to add ice to the tank but this is highly impractical unless it is a very short term method to deal with heat wave conditions. If you do need to add ice to your tank it can be added by freezing water in a bottle. The frozen water bottle can be lowered into the tank or hung on the side of the tank.

For very warm climates and for fish that naturally require cold water there is no real alternative other than a chiller unit. It is also possible to purchase an aquarium heater and chiller in one unit which can be used year round to maintain the water temperature in both summer and overwintering.

When choosing your chiller you will have a choice of thermoelectric, in-line or drop-in fish tank chiller.

Thermoelectric chillers are commonly used in small tanks of less than 60 gallon capacity. They are energy efficient and silent run and can be used in both salt and freshwater aquariums.

Drop-in chillers are commonly used in saltwater aquariums or reef set ups. They require no additional plumbing and are fitted in line with the tank filter. They are simple to install and have low maintenance requirements.

In-line aquarium chillers are manufactured for tanks with a capacity of 60 gallons or more. They have a motor, a compressor and cooling fans and will require a well-ventilated area for installation. They may require professional installation and they are quite large.

An aquarium thermometer is an inexpensive necessity to use in conjunction with your tank chiller. If your chiller fails or mismanages the temperature of your aquarium you need to know immediately. A thermometer is a reliable way of monitory the temperature.

The main disadvantages of fish tank chillers are the cost of the units themselves – which can vary from a few hundred up to several thousand dollars – and the energy that they consume, which can be 80-100 watts per hour.

Q&A: What is the cheapest chiller?

Question by Dan: What is the cheapest chiller?
I need a chiller to cool water to the exact degrees. However all the chillers i see are really expensive, i don’t plan on going really low, just to about 65 degrees. This is for a goldfish aquarium. This is not for the benefit of the goldfish, I’m only doing this as an experiment so information about preferred goldfish enviorment in unneeded. If anyone knows of another way to chill water that is controllable and will stay at a single temperature for a long period of time, it would be much appreciated. I tin spend, just nothing over 100 dollars.
