Koi fish for an Aquarium..Opinions please?

Question by JamaicanVixen: Koi fish for an Aquarium..Opinions please?
Yes, I know they are pond fish…but I absolutely love these fish. I live in NYC, so I dont have a pond. But I’m getting ready to move into a loft and I have more than enough space for the right size aquarium, I want my aquarium to have:2 Koi2 Butterfly KoiI am positive that I won’t have more than 4 Koi fish in the aquarium..As far as tank mates, I want about or maybe more of:4 Calico Shunbunkins4 Comets4 Rynkin2 Moors5 VeiltailsWhat size Tank would you recommend for these fish?Feel free to provide any advice..Thanks in Advance

Just for the 4 Koi you need at least a 75 to 100 Gallon tank, to start away with, as far as the other fish you need several hundred gallons of water to keep the water clean and the fish alive, they also need lots of space. Your loft may not be able to accommodate the weight of an aquarium that surface. It would weigh 800lbs per 100 gallons at least.

How can I raise KH/GH in my goldfish and Betta aquariums?

Question by Grace: How can I raise KH/GH in my goldfish and Betta aquariums?
I’ve used baking soda to get the proper pH in both aquariums by raising the change water to 7.5 for the goldfish and 7.-7.2 for the Betta. Their aquariums are now stable at 7.5 for the goldfish and 7. for the Betta. The Kh and Gh are withal low-toned. Kh at 6 percent and Gh at 3.5 percent. The water is very delicate hither in NYC. Is there any other way to increase the hardness without baking soda which will increase the pH? I’ve already added aquarium salt too, if that affects it.Our tap water fluctuates pH from 6. to 7.. I found this out when I changed my Betta’s water and he stopped swam around. I checked the pH and it was down to 6.2 from 7.. The pet stores around here just use tap for bettas but they have some very still bettas. They use an API product 7.5 for goldfish but it kills live plants. My goldfish has three beautiful live plants. Are seashells limestone equivalent? Do you get limestone and coral from aquatic stores?

Salt will not affect any of the parameters you are trying to adjust. First let me say it’s a good idea to think very carefully before adjusting pH or hardness in a tank. It’s usually not needed. Those values you give are perfectly acceptable to the fish you are keeping. Personally I would adjust it one bit. Both bettas and goldfish can live comfortably in a wide range of pH and hardness values and unless your pH is below 6 I wouldn’t adjust it at all, but the adjustments you mention are well within the comfort range for both the betta and goldfish so if you like to adjust the water conditions, just continue what you are doing, it’s getting the job done.MM

Where can I see a beluga whale (east coast)?

Question by livelikeriley: Where can I see a beluga whale (east coast)?
My fiancee’ is obsessed with beluga whales – are there any sea themed parks that have them near NYC? We’ve been to the NYC aquarium, but they don’t have any larger animals and sea world in Florida is rattling far away…anything closer to home?

Good fish stores/aquariums in nyc?

Question by your a: Good fish stores/aquariums in nyc?
I need to find a decent fish store that sells a variety of fish in the city, preferably downtown or on the west side. The store I normally go to doesn’t have the fish I want and im not risking fish being delivered. If you really know the store well, I need a brustlenose pleco and a dwarf loach… BADLY!!

Do you live in NYC or have you visited there?

Question by s h: Do you live in NYC or have you visited there?
I am going to be in New York on the first of April. The endured is supposed to be pretty bad. I was believing of going to The Statue of Liberty. Chinatown, and the New York Aquarium. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Emmmma!
The Statue of Liberty is cool, except the line can be very long. Check out Dylan’s Candy Bar and Serendipity. Their frozen hot chocolate is AMAZING. I visited the Intrepid with my family last summer, that was really cool. Also getting a tour of the city on one of those double decker buses is fun(:
