I have one BGKF and 4 african cichlids. They are more of the milder cichlids but my knifefish is not doing well. They already bit off his tail and tore his fins up and he doesn’t seem to be doing well. How can i build a spot for him where the other fish cant get to him and/or will my other cichlids acclimate to him. Also will his tail grow back because its been a while and his tail hasn’t grown back.
My tank is 25 gallons.

1. They are a poor mix and you can’t protect him except by removing him

2. A BGK can be raised in a 25 gallon (without african cichlids in it) for a while, but needs bigger to grow and thrive

3. There are very, very few "african cichlids" that will last in a 25 gallons. Of course "African cichlids" covers so many fish that it really means nothing in itself. The most popular type of African, the really colourful mbuna, need very large tanks for their size.

Unfortunately this tank is nothing but disaster if you keep it this way. My advice would be to return all of your fish and research what would be suitable to your aquarium.

The tail will grow back as long as it is not chewed down to the body, but not if you keep him in that tank of death.

What you really need to do is buy a 100 gallon tank, get a school of pirahnas, then jump in to wave away the mosquitos.

I have a few cichilds and I need another algae eater because mine is not doing its job properly. What type of algae eater would go good with my cichlids? I already know that the eater should be as big or larger than my cichilds.

This all depends on what Cichlids you have, the size of your tank, what the "algae eater" is you have now, and what type of algae you have!

Plecos are huge waste producers, mostly omnivores, and I have a couple of Plecos which are carnivores, won’t touch algae. There are over 800 species. Because they’re so messy they’re more likely to fuel a larger algae bloom than fix an algae problem!

The reason I ask what kind of algae you have is that some types won’t be eaten by anything anyway, and just need to be manually removed, and your feeding/routine maintenance amended to stop feeding this algae. Other types of algae are only eaten by one or two types of "algae eating" fish anyway.

So we need more details!

Akeath- In the wild they eat stuff from outside.

yes, you can collect them and rinse them off. Put them in a baggy and into the freezer. Once they are frozen chop them up with a hammer so you have small pieces and you can feed them to your fish.

They would be a good treat with lots of protein.

I have a 60 gallon tank and I need to know how many small size african cichlids can I get for my tank.

10-40 depending if you are going to use specialized filters or just hang over the back filter or gravel bed filters.
The specialized filters can filter water better and pump constantly and come equipped with a gravel suction device and a bacteria bed like canister or a media filtration bed so you can filter water more efficiently.
Simple hang over the tank ones do not, and will not support vast amounts of waste.
Plus you have to remember that the fish may grow and the maximum size must be adequate for them to move around and not get into fights with neighbors.
A 2-3 inch fish requires at least 1-3 gallons depending on territorial behavior per fish, so you do some minor math there and then calculate for every 10 fish you must filter at least 30-90 gallons of water per hour.
Ammonia levels are a silent killer and can get out of hand fast.

Thanks again….. on another note

I know 6 gallon is small, but its the largest tank i have space for at this time, so is there anyway i can start a cichlid tank in it? with smaller chichlids? if not…. are there any sudgestions of fish that will be ok to live in there? and anything but guppies, neon tetras, platies mollies, and swordtails.
