I’ve never actually set up a proper freshwater fish tank before. I do have experience with guppies and bettas with some success. I know it might not be advisable to set up a Marine aquarium without mastering freshwater fish-keeping, but is it possible to do so? I’d like to jump right into saltwater aquariums as I’m not that attracted to the freshwater fish.
Yes it is possible. The general concepts are the same for SW vs FW. Saltwater is significantly more expensive and requires a great deal more work, testing, and continuous maintenence. Another major consideration is that you cannot stock a SW tank anywhere near the levels of FW so it almost always requires a large tank. Since you specifically mentioned fish and not corals, you will most likely need a large tank 90 gallons or more, unless you’re just interested in a clown fish or two.
The best advice I can give, is to do a lot of research before starting out. Research the requirements of the fish you want to keep. Research how to setup a saltwater tank, and how and what to test and how to maintain the tank. If you have a local fish club, it’s a great idea to join and get help and advice from local fish keepers.
Once you do decide on your setup, take it slowly.

I want to start a saltwater Aquarium Fish Only. So Far I know, I need: Tank (100 L) , Protein Skimmer, Heater, Hydrometer, Cushed Coral, Lighting and External Filter (is a UV steralizer good or not?)
Is this everything and is an external alone good enough or must I get also internal?

I am starting another SW aqaurium soon it will be a 125 gallon aquarium, I want to know what type of filtration is best? Also send links, for protein skimmers, filters, light, anything! How much live rock will I need? How many powerheads, what type? What should I be expecting to pay for JUST the aquarium and stand? Are overflows the way to go??? Also do over flows need to be built in from the factory or can you buy one to just insert? I will probably start out with a F-O-W-L-R system first then slowly go into reefs. What are the best products? I have had saltwater aquariums so I am not clueless on this subject, but I have never had one this size. Any help would be great!

Is there a cheap kind of substrate sand for saltwater aquariums? I dont want to use use live sand this time…it is rather expensive. Anyone know of a plain jane sand that is OK to use?
Live sand is sand that has live organisms growing in it. It is bagged and sold in most pet stores and kick start the cycle of a saltwater aquarium…and here’s something that will really make your jaws drop "LIVE ROCK"!!! Maybe you should know what you are talking about before you jump to conclusions that I have been "smoking something". Now if there are any REAL fish people out there that can help instead of trying to be cute….

I have a new saltwater aquarium, but the live sand I bought turned out to have expired a few months ago. Does that mean that most of the bacteria has died off? Even so, shouldn’t there should still be some, just not as much as before? Therefore, shouldn’t I be able to use it, it will just take a longer time to cycle?
