I want 2 or 3 small pet sharks. Can you recommend shark types, aquarium types, etc?

The smallest freshwater sharks are the Red Tailed Sharks/Rainbow Sharks. You can’t have more than one in an aquarium when they are adult as they are aggressive towards their own kind. Their maximum size is 6" long, but they do grow wide enough to look impressive. Each of these sharks needs a 55 gallon, cycled tank. They can’t be housed together. They can’t be housed with more of their kind. Technically, both these sharks are catfish, but are called sharks.

If you are looking for a shoal of sharks, Bala Sharks can top 12" and are shoaling fish. But for a group of 4-5 you are looking towards at least a 150 gallon tank.

Advice:
- Do research. Sharks are not the best beginner fish.

The question arose when my 3 year old son asked why there weren’t any sharks in the lake we were visiting. We told him sharks don’t live in fresh water. When he asked why, We wondered what would happen if you put an open ocean shark in a fresh water lake.

I am sure their gills are designed and optimized for salt water, so I suspect they’d die, but I wonder how long they’d live and how horrible the death would be.

http://www.amonline.net.au/fishes/fishfacts/fish/cleucas.htm
The Bull Shark can live in a wide range of habitats from coastal marine and estuarine, to freshwater. It has been recorded from the surf zone down to a depth of at least 150 m. It is the only species of shark that is known to stay for extended periods in freshwater. It has been reported nearly 4000 km from the sea in the Amazon River system, and is known to breed in Lake Nicaragua, Central America.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_shark#Freshwater_tolerance

Only 43 species of elasmobranch in ten genera and four families have been reported to enter fresh water, of which the bull shark is the best known. Other species that enter rivers include the stingrays (Dasyatidae, Potamotygonidae and others) and sawfishes (Pristidae). Some skates (Rajidae), smooth dogfishes (Triakidae), and sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus) regularly enter estuaries. The ability of elasmobranchs to enter fresh water is limited because their blood is normally at least as salty (in terms of osmotic strength) as seawater, through the accumulation of urea and trimethylamine oxide, but bull sharks living in fresh water reduce the concentration of these solutes by up to 50%. Even so, bull sharks living in fresh water need to produce twenty times more urine than those in salt water.

Until the 1970s, researchers thought the sharks in Lake Nicaragua were a separate species because there was no way for the sharks to move in or out. It was discovered that they were jumping along the rapids just like salmon. Bull sharks tagged inside the lake were later caught in the open ocean.

http://www.elasmo-research.org/education/topics/p_fw_rays.htm

….and the notorious Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas), all of which penetrate far up freshwater rivers — the Bull Shark has been recorded some 2,600 miles (4,200 kilometres) from the mouth of the Amazon River — and some even complete their life cycles in freshwater.

I bought a shark fillet at the grocery store at the request of my 7 year old son and have no idea how to prepare it, any ideas? What spices to use, how to cook it, such as oven or broiler, what temps, and how long to cook it. any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Shark is similar to swordfish–a dense and flavorful ‘meaty’ kind of fish that you’ll want to keep simple and cook so it retains moisture–overcooked, it can be rather dry. My suggestion is to flour it lightly and sautee gently in margarine or butter, seasoning it as it cooks with a little squeeze of lemon juice & salt. It also broils well [similar to a beef filet in that regard] and can be seasoned by a little glazing of marg or butter, lemon juice, salt – and some parsley flakes when you serve it. Depending on thickness of filet, it shouldn’t take long at all. As with all fish, it’s done when you can flake it apart with a fork [testing it, right?]. We like a few capers in with the lemon juice, too. The butter adds moisture, the lemon juice adds ‘tang’, the capers add a little zip. A side dish of some creamy potato thing, some green peas, a few tomato slices… Shark, like swordfish, is the "steak of the sea" and has about the same requirements as a steak dinner would. Bon appetit!

i am doing a report about the great white shark and i need to know how.. it grows all of its teeth…. what makes its teeth so they can grow back what are they made out of?

Sharks loose and grow teeth throughout their entire lives. Their teeth are specialized versions of the little "teeth" in their skin, the dermal denticles. Quite recently engineers realized that by reducing the amount of turbulence these denticles greatly reduce the drag on a shark as it glides through the water. This discovery is now used to create rough surfaces on e.g. airplane wings! If you look into a shark’s mouth, you can see row after row of teeth. Note that the flatter side of a tooth is the part that faces outwards (towards the lips, the labial side) once it has marched forward to the front row. The rounder side faces inwards (towards the tongue, the lingual side). Once it reaches the front row, a given tooth may only last 10 days. Given that there can be 50 teeth in the front rows of the upper and lower jaws, and they only last 10 days, a single shark sheds around 1800 teeth per year, and tens of thousands in a life time. Which explains why fossil shark teeth are so common. If you ever visit the National Aquarium in Baltimore, look for teeth on the bottom of the shark tank!

Has three different types of tissues: the orthodentine and osteodentine, which form the pulp cavity and root structure of a tooth, and the enameloid, which is the hard outer surface.

do you have an air stone? is it working properly? sounds like he is gasping for air. take a cup of tank water and pour it back into the tank slowly to create bubbles, this will temporaroly add some oxygyn to the water, do it as many times and as often as you can intill you can get better air circulation, "if that sturns out to be the problem"
