I wouldn't put them together.Most Malawi cichlids tend to be very aggressive and would probably harm or even kill the barbs.Depending on what types of Malawi you have you may already be at the stocking limit for your tank or even need to upgrade to a larger one.

Cichlids are the more aggressive fish and mixing the Barbs in with them will result in one of them getting injured. Also, a 29gal is too small for a school of Tiger Barbs and a school of Malawians.

Both fish require different water condition so should not be kept together. The barbs are best a neutral or slightly acidic water 6.7 to 7ph, whilst the malawis like hard water 7.5 to 8ph .
DON’T MIX THEM.

You can try, but being that cichlids are aggressive most likely it wont work. However, tiger barbs arent that expensive, so it wouldnt be a costly experiment to see if you could make it work.

I doubt it. Tiger barbs tend to be aggressive and as far as I know, the cichlids are the most aggressive group of fish I've ever heard of. With the possible exception of certain types of piranha.
