I am visiting a friend in Houston this weekened and I tried googling live fish near houston/discus fish near houston but google does not have very many matches. If I do live fish in austin there are several places that come up with addresses and websites and all that great stuff. You would think Houston would have a lot of sites out there.

The absolute best place to get discus near Houston is Houston Aquarium Warehouse in Stafford, TX, just a little bit off of Hwy 59. Incredible quality for the price. The owner is a distributor to a lot of different stores, so you’ll be able to pick them up cheaper than in other places and he’s got a nice price range starting around $25 or $35 to $150.
He’s also got a lot of rarer aquarium fish suitable for planted aquarium tanks like apistogrammas and rams.

http://www.houstonaquariumwarehouse.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=54:discus-list&catid=3:in-stock&Itemid=56

Another good place is Xtreme Fish and Pets off of Bellaire. He often sells large discus for around $50 or $60. The owner is a great guy, and you can often find a couple oddballs around the store too. If you buy enough, you may be able to negotiate a lower price with him.

http://www.xtremefishpets.com/storelocation.html

Everywhere else, the discus are either pretty poor quality or way overpriced.

There are a couple of other good fish stores in Houston for different reasons, feel free to email me if you’d like to know more, but these are best two places to get discus in my opinion.

With the variety of african cichlids, why would you want to? African cichlids like the water at pH 8+ – keep that in mind if you are trying to mix other fish… south american cichlids like soft water… Pacu’s definitely like soft water…

I have seen recommendations to put Synodontis catfish with african cichilds, I don’t do that, but I even keep my fish grouped together by lake (I don’t mix my Tanganyika with my Malawi cichlids)…

I am getting a ten gallon with a filter, heater, etc, and I wanted to know how many I could put in there. There will be no other fish, just guppies.
If I got males and females and they had fry, what would I do with the fry? Would I leave them in there? Would it get to crowded?

I would say you can get 10-12 MAXIMUM all males. Or you can get a few females but no more than 6 because they are usually pregnant. They have fry every 20-28 days. You can tell they are pregnant by the dark red or black gravid spot near the anal fin. I haven’t seen a non-pregnant guppy. Unless they were separated from the males at birth.

If you plan on breeding them I suggest that you get a trio. 1 male and 2 females. Remember to have more females than males at the ratio 1male: 2 female or 1 male: 3 female. Or else of there are and even or more amount of males they will harass the females to death.

Also, be careful, guppies breed like crazy. So if you decide to mix up the males and females together then you will most probably end up with an overcrowded 10 gallon tank by the end of a month or two. New females have anywhere from 2 to 20 fry and older ones can have up to 100s of fry. Just giving some extra advice.

Good luck

There have been 3 shark attacks in Sydney in the last 3 weeks including 1 in the harbour. What do you think we should do to reduce these attacks? Do you think hunting them is the answer?

No, sharks should not be hunted. Perhaps there may be a few more of them in the water now since the laws were put in place to protect them, but that’s a good thing. It means they’re on their way back from potential extinction from overfishing.

People need to be more personally accountable for the choices they make and the risks they take. Education would help too. There are numerous risks in entering the oceans off Australia that could be potentially fatal or make you ill. There’s rips, dangerous surf, sandbars to break your neck on, collapsing sandbars to sweep you out to sea, undertows, stingers/jellyfish, rays, sharks, puffer fish, polluted water from ocean outfall (ie treated sewerage) blown back in to shore, even crocodiles depending on where you go and when.

The key is knowing when to stay out of the water and when the odds are it’s safer to go in. You just need to learn what the dangers are so you can weigh the risk. And each time you go down to the water, make an intelligent choice about whether you decide to go in.

For info on shark behaviour and suggestions on how to gauge the risk of sharks check out the Australian Shark Attack File. It’s probably the best, up-to-date public resource: http://www.taronga.org.au/tcsa/conservation-programs/australian-shark-attack-file/shark-research.aspx

Just a thought – if you went to Africa would you traipse around on foot in a game park when you suspected lions, jackals and hippos might be in the area? Would you seriously want all dangerous wildlife hunted and killed just so that humans could safely go anywhere any time?

With an average of one person killed by shark a year in Australia for the last 50 odd years, it’s a pretty minimal likelihood you’ll be killed by a shark if you take care to avoid the riskier scenarios. (eg swimming alone, swimming at unpatrolled areas, at dusk or dawn, when water is murky, when sharks are known to be in the area etc.)

It really depends i dont have much options here the pet store tanks are a little more expesive probably better product but they had a 55 gallon with no filter for about 300.00. Just go to your local stores and check them out before you buy one and find out someone else had a better deal. The starter tanks are good to get you going because they usually have everything you need for the first couple of months especially the bigger tanks.

i have a tropical tank set up in my room. me and my girlfriend are a huge fan of porcupine puffer fish and on a web page on the internet it says that you need a saltwater aquarium. is this true? and if so how would i be able to change my tropical tank into a saltwater aquarium?

thanks X

Yes they need saltwater.
Saltwater aquariums are very costly and are much harder to run. Porcupine puffers need at least a 90 gallon tank. For salt-water you need to begin research I would at least research for 6 mths. there is soo much you will need to learn and understand. I would start at the library "Saltwater aquariums for dummies" good book first I’ve read about them. Then join some online forum like http://reefcentral.com/ http://aquariumpros.ca/
ask around get a feel for it, you will need various items including:
Filtrarion: many different options sump, canister, wet/dry, HOB (usually only for smaller tanks), biological (hard to use and takes a lot to be effective)

Protein Skimmer: Don’t skimp on this one looking to pay about $150-$300

Heater: Get a trustworthy heater no cheap ones (I’m mean you can get a good one for maybe $25)

Lighting: You will need strong lighting especially if you want to go into reefs or anemones or something, with just the puffer you could get away with compact florescent lighting or just florescent lights. But there are T-5, metal halide and many more options.

You will need good circulation that is created with powerheads.

You will need a crushed coral substrate or sand that keeps the pH in balance.

A good test kit NO STRIPS!! Get a good drop kit.

Live rock usually 1-3 lbs. per gallon this gets expensive it is usually $5-$9 a lb. but you can go half live half fake then the fake becomes live…

You will also need to keep everything specific to your puffer if that is what you want, they need special heaters they can’t have glass they have beaks and can bite through them all equipment has to be kept away from the fish so it doesn’t damage it. And the puffer eats many inverts and some fish….

Best of Luck
Kyle

P.S.
Doubt your still interested but you can e-mail me with any questions.

OH YEAH stay away fro large pet stores go to a local private owned fish store and get their advice. No petsmart or petco or pet supplies plus….
