How much guppies to put in 18 gallon aquarium?
February 23rd, 2010 | by admin |Well I’m still undecided on what to put in my tank, but I’m 100% sure that I want guppies. I need to know how much to put in the tank and any suggestions on anything else to put in? I was also thinking putting those fresh water shrimp things if its okay.
Guppies are a marvellous choice for that tank size. The magic rule for fish like guppis is 1 inch of adult sized fish per gallon of water available. guppies as adults are 1-2 inches in length so meassure of that guide to figure how much fish you can keep. Keep in mind you need to count for room taken up by decorations!
And shrimp should be fine seeing as that they are soo small.
Cheers

I’d say a male and a female. Your going to have a ton in no time. Any females you buy are most likely already pregnant.

if you get shrimps don’t get ghost shrimps… their boring
you could actually get quite alot of small shrimp for a 18 gallon tank.red cherry shrimp look nice and you could get about 20… but id prefer to get a mix of other shrimp like bumblebee shrimp.
i wouldn’t get just get guppies i would get 5 guppies and 6 to 7 platies(not to get confused with pleco which can grow to more than 60 cm!)

ok, well in a 18g, guppies ONLY, its safe to add about 18 =] BUT if you want other fish, y not try one or 2 ‘centerpece’ fish such as mollies or platys?? get 2 mollies or platys as centerpeices of the same sex, make SURE to get ones that have a max size of 2 or 3 inches =] with 2 mollies or platys, i would get about 10 -15 guppies… add 3 guppies wait a week, then add 2 more guppies per week untill you get the number in between 10 and 15 you want, then wait another week and add the 2 mollys/platys, to minimise agression. good luck!! =]
PS: make SURE to have all one sex of fish.. guppies breed like crazy and can breed with mllies and platys!!

It is true that the rule of thumb is that 1 inch of fish is allowed per 1 gallon of water, but that only goes for aquaria without constant aeration. With constant aeration and good filtration, you could keep 3 inches of fish per gallon. Remember that water breathes through its surface so by agitating the surface through filtration and aeration will ensure that the oxygen levels in the water is adequate for your fish to thrive. (I have a 20 gal tank with at least 45 thriving guppies.)

the rule of thumb is one for every gallon. you should have 1 male for every 2 females. start with just a couple guppies then after about a month get a few more and so on
