Question by Alexander: Which power filter is better? (more details)?

The aquaclear works great. I was going to get the Rena once, it was on clearance. Then I saw how much the cartridges were. Forget it. I have also heard it is quite noisy. But I use an aquaclear, and it truly does a great job. It comes with three different types of media, for better filtration. It has the carbon, foam, and some ceramic to build a great bacterial colony. It is also quieter than the Rena. Basically, the Aquaclear is quieter, more customizable, more effective, and cheaper than the Rena.

Kris is using some of my old acrylic yarn leftovers in one of his fish tanks – supposedly the small rainbowfish (isn’t it cute?) likes to spawn in a swab-like structure. He cut up the old Red Heart and made a little mop… and so far it has worked! Baby fish! You can read more about it (and see a baby fish!) on his blog.

What are the good and bad sides of LED lighting in an aquarium?

Question by : What are the full and bad sides of LED lighting in an aquarium?
I’m upgrading my tank to a 55, and have the option of going with the Marineland 55 gallon tank/stand/hood ensamble. The lights included are LED lights. What are the ups and downs of LED lights? Will they be harmful/beneficial to live plants? Can regular fluorescent lights go into a LED light setup? Also, could you guys check out this question? It wouldn’t show up in the list when I posted it.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgoUUDYV7bok7xES5ah4krnsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20120305181112AAieK5jWould you recommend that I do, or don’t, get the aquarium with day/night LED’s? I has Amazon Swords and Anubias plants.

Answer by BettaZen
The pros are that they produce little to no heat, they’re very bright, and they don’t really burn out. The cons are that if you do need to replace them, they’re currently more expensive than other lighting options. Generally, LEDs aren’t that great for live plants, but if you get full-spectrum LEDs, they’ll work fine. Be forewarned that full-spectrum bulbs of any type cost a lot.Usually, LED lights take a special socket, and as such, a fluorescent or incandescent light won’t fit in that socket unless you swap out the assembly. That’s a bit more trouble than it’s worth, when you consider the fact that you might need to rewire and reconstruct the entire hood.

300 lumen 5W led aquarium light, enough for “medium” light plants?

Question by : 300 lumen 5W led aquarium light, enough for “medium” light plants?
I have purchased this light under the pretense that it was “super bright”. After reading more it seems that this is not true and it is fairly low. it has 51 white leds and 3 blue for night. WIll this be enough to grow “medium” light requirement plants or only low? I was looking to create a carpet effect in my 10g tank and am thinking java moss may be my only option. would this light fall into the “low” category? Could you recommend any plants that would be able to survive. I think i would prefer small plants and maybe 1 or two 6 inches or so. Thank you for your help.

Best answer:

Answer by DC
Yes, that light would be extremely low. For comparison, the standard fluorescent light used for a 10g (15 watts, 18″) would be roughly in the 800-900 lumens range, and that would be considered low light.I’m honestly not sure what could be successfully grown with such low light. I would suggest starting with the basics – Java Fern, Anubias, Anacharis, etc – and see if any of those can survive.
