A short video of some of the tropical fish, shrimps and snails we have, or have had in stock. With over 130 species of freshwater tropicals in stock, Tyne Valley Aquatics easily has the best range in North East England. All our tanks are individually filtered and each has its own net. As our water quality is so good, we have an excellent range of tropical freshwater shrimps in stock (which make excellent cleaners). Every week we get new and interesting species in, some rare. All healthy. All well looked after. When searching for aquatic shops near Newcastle, forget the rest, use the best. All species are available for next day delivery with our guaranteed mail order service. Check the website for further details: www.tynevalleyaquatics.co.uk

My Malawi tank / aquarium is decorated only with rocks, this is necessary because mbuna from lake malawi are rock dwelling cichlids. Mbuna like rocks, caves and sand, so the malawi tank has to be decorated with huge stones. They are quite agressive and territoral at times but belong to the most beautiful and colorful sweetwater fishes.

In my Malawi tank, i keep Labeotropheus trewavasae, Tropheops Macrophtalmus, Pseudotropheus Saulosi, Maylandia Estherae, Labidochromis Hongi and Labidochromis caeruleus (Yellow). Especially the Labeotropheus and Tropheops are mbuna / mbunas that look very good and show interesting behaviour.

Tropheops macrophthalmus is the only mbuna / cichlid / fish in my malawi tank that has got a name. And no, its not nemo! I call him “Saddam” because he is sometimes a little tyrant!

Before you say there are too many fish, I promise you there aren’t, if there were any less then the aggression between them would be too high!

The set up consists of:

Juwel Vision 450 Fish Tank (450 litres)
1 x Juwel Jumbo internal filter
1 x Fluval FX5 external filter
2 x 1500lph powerheads with air inlets and polishing filters
2 x 300W heaters
Approx 100-120kg ocean rock
Colour and Blue T5 lighting tubes
Blue moonlight LED strips

As expected the malawis are breeding regularly, there always 2-3 females pregnant at any one time, 25-50% water change carried out once per week.

Approx cost including fish was £2k but it brings hours of relaxation so worth every penny !!
