Question by idk.: Is there a checklist of soe sort that wpuld help me uby the best equipment for y saltwater aquarium?
such as fliter heater, powerheads , protein skimer, hydrometer/frefractometer? what kind of saltwater mix should i buy? sand or gravel?

Answer by pleccy
Hi,Saltwater aquariums are totally different to freshwater tanks. Marine fish (such as Clownfish) come from an environment in which certain parameters (such as pH and salinity) hardly ever change. The best piece of ‘equipment’ would be a good book on marine fish. Make sure you do plenty of research before spending any money on equipment as what you want to keep will influence what you will need.

Answer by Ca la G
10,000 gallons? i don’t know, the biggest home aquarium i’ve ever seen is 800, and that’s HUGE. i imagine you should use about 100 250w coat halide. that should come out to be 2.5 watt per gallon. which is considered high light for any aquarium over 200 watts.

Q&A: Best option for lower freshwater aquarium Ph?

Question by Ddraith: Best option for lower freshwater aquarium Ph?
So the tap water here in Austin is around 8.5-8.7 Ph. Gh around 6. I keep several sprecies of Amazonian fish, so this Ph is way too high. I would like to get stable around 7.2. I have been adding small amounts of API Ph Down to my 46g bowfront, with some success, although I am seek take it slow. Thanks for your insight.I am wondering if this is the most efficient way to get low and stay stable. Is there a better product out there? As far as filters, the Aquarium Pharmaceutical Purifier gets good reviews, but goes for 50 bones, and 25 for a replacement cartidge every 150 gallons. I am wondering a Britta filter might not be a cheaper option for a similar result. And if I do use filtration, am I leaving myself open to Ph swings from lack of buffering ions?

Peat moss is usually the best to lower your pH.

I have a tank that is 1′ by 2′ and about 16″ deep. I also have an animal in it that produces a lot of waste, but is extremely stressed nether heavy water flow, and as it stands even with the filter, I’ll have to do partial water changes every week.It isn’t EXACTLY a fish, it’s an axolotl, and it is quite common to have to do partial water changes every week, no matter how good your filter is.

Best acrylic aquarium scratch repair?

Question by John: Best acrylic aquarium scratch repair?
I made some pretty bad fraying using one of those magnetic algae cleaning bricks. I have a huge saltwater aquarium that cannot be emptied. I need the best repair kit that works wet and is non-toxic to my fish. I want my acrylic to look brand new!

Best answer:

Answer by memyself&I
Oooowwww… my tanks are glazed, but having worked with acrylics, I don’t know of anything that will repair frets. Scratches are embedded in the plastic..and most polishes used on acrylics aren’t polishes that can be used with fish. If the tank were emptied, a buff polish could smooth out most of the scratches, then the tank could be thoroughly rinsed of residue…but inside the tank while the fish are there? owww… If I come across any info on a “safe” polisher, I’ll hunt away your question again.
