Question by boinglightbulb: What is the appropriate way to change an aquarium filter bag? I’m concerned that by replacing my old filter bag with a new one that I’ll lose some beneficial bacteria and harm my 30 gallon tank. What is the proper way to clean a filter and change the filter bag? Thanks!

Answer by John When you say filter catching I’m guessing you have a HOB [hang-on-the-back] filter or Bio-Wheel type? I have no direct experience of this type but I believe the actual wheel stays in place & you are merely replacing the filter which ‘polishes’ the water? If this is the case it is fine-simply rinse the wheel gently in old tank water taken from a partial water change. As with any type of biological filter you need to only be removing the loose gunk & debris while preserving the established bacterial colony.

Question by Rick G.: Why is my aquarium filter so loud? I was given a fluval 403 filter for my 55 gallon aquarium and I have it up and running, but it’s so loud. To the point where it’s completely distracting from any task occurring in the same room. I realize these things would make some noise, but theres no way people would buy them if they’re really this loud. Something has to be wrong with it. Ideas? Otherwise I’m just going to have to run it only at night.

Answer by Pegs Tegan Hmmm, I suggest, take it off, and take it to where ever you got it, and ask the person to check it out, explaining your problem. If it is just a loud machine, then I suggest you get a new one! Wish I could help more!

Answer by Vash 1. You (must) run the filter 24/7, in other word, ALL the time. The filter system of an aquarium is not for “filtering” only. Its primary purpose is the biological filtering. Fish, produces ammonia from their gills. Leftover food and fish waste also produce ammonia. Ammonia is toxic. Filter media has tons of surface areas which will have beneficial bacterias grow on there to feed on the ammonia. If you turn off the filter, not only the ammonia will start to build up in the water, but also that the bacterias will start to starve and die off. Worse, the bacterias can die within minutes if the filter media isn’t staying wet.Remember, most fish die within days or weeks after purchase can all be contributed to ammonia poisoning. It takes 3+ weeks to establish a “cycled” filter media with sufficient amount of bacterias to break down ammonia and its finished product – nitrite. Both are toxic and can kill your fish. You must leave the filter on ALL the time.2. If you want something to switch things on and off by itself, it is called a timer.I use two timers myself, for the aquarium lights only. So I won’t get too much algae, and the fish can have a normal day-night cycle. This is the one I use. Both of mine work just fine. No need to pay more for fancy ones.http://www.petstore.com/Current_USA_Dual_Outlet_Timer_Aquarium_Metal_Halide_Parts-Current_USA-CU01390-AQLIPAMH-vi.html

Answer by nosoop4u246 Consider that it may be more worthwhile to make a DIY sump, peculiarly since there is then no dealing with pressurization. If you do go the canister route, this would be your outflank bet: http://randystacye.com/diy_canister_filter.htmA sump would ultimately be much simpler, more effective, and less serve, but it will take up more space… hopefully you could conceal it in the stand, or even behind the tank.http://www.aquariumlife.net/projects/aquarium-sumps/76.asphttp://home.ptd.net/~reef101/diysump.htmlhttp://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Uthup_Sump_Filter.htmlIf you use a canister, the size isn’t really important, just do sure you can fit plenty of media in it. For a sump, even 10 gallons would be sufficient, but something like a 20 gallon sump would be far more effective.
