What are some easy tropical fish to use in a new 10 gallon aquarium?

I have a 10 gallon tank and would like to start a tropical fish tank, but I’ve only had goldfish before this. I know I have to let the tank go through a two week cycle before I put fish in it to build up the good bacteria and such, but I was wondering if there were some easy, but pretty and nice to keep, tropical fish to start out with.

How do you convert a saltwater aquarium to a freshwater aquarium?

I recently purchased an aquarium from somebody that was using it as a saltwater aquarium. It is very dirty and has salt caked all over it. I need to clean off all the algae and salt. Do I just use water and a scrubber or is there more to it? I read somewhere to use vinegar, anyone ever heard of this? Also what is a protein scimmer? The tank came with all types of stuff that I’m not familiar with. Can I keep any of the decor that was in the tank if I rinse it off? Thanks for any advice you can give.
I already have 5 fancy tailed goldfish and 2 small catfish in my other tank that I plan on transferring into this tank. The decor is mostly rocks and fake plants. I removed all of the old gravel because I want to use the rocks that I had in my old tank.
It came with 2 filters a dual bio-wheel and the the one that uses rocks with charcoal. I was planning on keeping the filters and replacing what I can with new stuff. Or can I clean the pads and wheels as well as the casing?

red eared slider turtle tank habitat 125 gal custom aquarium

My 125 Gallon turtle tank. Home made canopy, overflow and wet dry bucket trickle filter system, low maintenance and very clean. two red eared slider turtles with 5 gold fish and 5 minnows. Built entire system for about $400, got tank and stand almost free off craigs list, had to reenforce stand and paint black to match decor. Rocks I got from construction left overs (free). They love their new basking area and large area to swim around. Tank is undersized by 15 – 25 gallons of water since its 10 gal for every inch of turle so next tank will need to be bigger once they grow a bit more.

Essential Aquarium Supplies For Goldfish

Essential Aquarium Supplies For Goldfish

You really shouldnt keep goldfish in a bowl. It is much too small to keep them alive for any length of time. Bowls also need daily maintenance, as the water gets smelly fast. I know you always hear the story about the goldfish that lived for thirty years in a gallon bowl, but that is the exception than the rule. Before you get your goldfish, you need to get these essential aquarium supplies.

The Tank

This might seem obvious for a list of essential aquarium supplies, but some people need practical advice. Get a new tank or a tank that only housed fish successfully in the past. For example, I took on my Dad’s 20 gallon goldfish tank a couple of years after the last fish died. My five goldfish are currently thriving in it.

Get the biggest tank you can afford that your floor will also be able to carry. My goldfish tank is in the basement because of its incredible weight. Also, my bedroom is in the basement, so it works out all right. Bigger tanks require much less overall maintenance than smaller tanks.

The Filter

Another essential aquarium supply is your filtration system. These have come a long way in the last decade. They are easier to maintain and less messy than the filtration systems of the past. I recommend for goldfish what’s called a biological filtration system. They usually hang over the side of the tank. Add extra filter cartridges to your list of essential aquarium supplies.

The Air Pump

You need some sort of water agitation system for your essential aquarium supplies. This includes incredibly inexpensive air hose, various air stones (also called “bubble stones”) and the all-important air pump. When you can, get at least two in case the one air pump dies on you.

Thermometer

Although goldfish are classified as cold water fish, they prefer a constant water temperature of about 68 degrees Farenheight. You need to know how hot or cold the water is in order to keep your fish at optimum health. An inexpensive but necessary aquarium supply is a tank thermometer. There are ones you can stick on the outside or inside of the tank.
Electrical Outlet Strip

This might seem like a strange item to add to a list of essential aquarium supplies, but it makes life for you and your fish a lot easier. A tank needs several electrical outlets, and having a strip to plug them in saves you a lot of time trying to figure out what wire goes to what home appliance.
