My aquarium heater broke in my nano reef tank how does it affect my tank chemically?

Question by benyuen420: My aquarium heater broke in my nano reef tank how does it affect my tank chemically?
I have a 12 gallon nano tank. The heater popped out of the glass encasement and doing bubbling noises. I unplugged and removed it but there seems to be a black chemical in the tube of the heater. Also my anemone and all my coral shrunk and all my fish are in shock. Is it a chemical problem and do I need to replace the live rock and live sand?

Answer by S H
The fish were probably shocked by the electricity when the heater cracked. The black chemic may be residual carbon from the interior if it burned, which is probably did. I don’t think it is a chemical problem, but the fish being harmed by an electrical current.Keep a close eye on everything. I assuming’t advise removing the live sand or shake until you know the tank will not survive. It is possible the inhabitants may bounce back. Was the heater UL listed? What type of heater was it? If I was topfin…it was only a matter of clocked until that happened. Visitherm, Aqueon, and hydor are good heater brands. I know visitherm has a lifetime warranty and they WILL replace a heater with a problem.Sorry that happened, I hope everything turns out alright :(

what kind of daily maintenance would a 12 gallon nano reef aquarium require?

Question by SuperDuperMan: what kind of daily maintenance would a 12 gallon nano reef aquarium require?
i’ve heard that small saltwater aquariums require daily care, but nobody has told me specifically how difficult or clocking-consuming it would be. can someone help?

Answer by Graham R
i have a 10 gallon and once you get it started and going it very easy….just do day or bi daily transcend offs….and check the nitrates levels every few day….and you may have to keep up with the algae on the glass…and once or twice a week check the ammonia levels and the calcium and phosphate levels……its not that clock consuming…i bet i don’t spend 30min a week working on it….and a weekly 1/2 to 1 gallon water change…

1 Gallon Saltwater Aquarium and Globe Ecosystem

1 Gallon Pico Reef, 1/2 gallon sealed SPS reef tank, 19 gallon bog terrarium globe, 75 gallon planted tank with Co2 injection. Keeping ecosystems in odd containers changes the chemistry and dynamics interestingly and has a direct correlation to evaporation rates, nitrate binding or export, and temperature stabilization to name a few.

For example, a fluted vase design allows for an inner-diameter resting lid, which changes the salinity and saltcreep maintenance drastically vs any other shape. It also provides an angled surface for detritus accumulation, which is easily wiped for maintenance and this is (nitrogen) export.

A small square palmtop design, with an internal plant sub-division, becomes the first and still the only longterm sealed (non evaporating) coral reef aquarium, growing acroporid coral specimens into 3 inch tabular forums documented over a two year course.
Shape matters in pico reef design, and pico reef design matters to marine biology as a whole because it influences coral morphology, allelopathy, and new observations for science unique to hyperconcentrated niche environments.
thank you for stopping by!

I invite everyone to discuss the biology or problems associated with any aquarium care, and feel free to link your own micro reefs if you keep them.

Anyone who would like to research pico reef history can start at Reefs.Org and Reefcentral around 2002 and nano-reef.com
These forums paved the way for the explosion in popularity and are 95% of the existing documentation regarding progress of this layman’s science

It seemed interesting for all of us to share pico reef design concepts on this video, so post anything you know about them please or any reference material on the matter.

nice to meet you all and thank you for watching!

I stay active enough on this forum and in the marine and fish forums it won’t be too hard to find me so we can chat about marine biology and aquatic sciences if not here. I will also help you build and stabilize these, so hit me up in the comments if you start one.

58 liter saltwater aquarium – dec. 2009 – Canon EOS 500d/Rebel T1i

My saltwater aquarium at 58 liters. The aquarium has been running for 2 ½ years, with a few stone corals and soft corals. In the aquarium, I have a clown fish (Amphiprion ocellaris) and a yellowtail blue damselfish (Chrysiptera parasema). Aquarium runs with few water changes and the water changes are made with ordinary tap water.

The movie is filmed with my Canon 500D with High Definition video. This is the first film taken with my the camera, so the movie is a little experiment. The film is processed with Canon’s own program for MOV files – ie: ZoomBrowser EX.
