Q&A: How long does it take for aquarium plant fertilizer to take effect?

Question by chamelean75: How long does it take for aquarium plant fertilizer to take effect?
2 days ago, I put some Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Leaf Zone into my 2.5 gallon tank. Since my tank is so small, I basically ended up putting the equivalent of a couple of drops. I think my tank is extremely deficient in nutrients since the leaves are turning white/light-colored green. Should I put in more fertilizer? I don’t want to put in too much because I don’t want an algae disaster. I have plenty of light, 12watts worth of a flourescent lightly. So anyone have any idea how long it’d take for a plant fertilizer to take any effect? I have Giant Hydro and it’s suppose to be extremely dieting growing but mine doesn’t seem to be growing real fast. It’s not dying but it’s not really thriving either.

You should see noticeable results within the next few days.I’m surprise that you need to use ferts at all. I have a 3 gallon tank packed full with java moss, java fern, naja grass and some sunset hygro (not hydro) and it’s all growing like crazy. I use no ferts and have about 9 watts of light. The problem might be with the fact that you have giant hygro. Giant hygro is a large plant, a healthy plant will be taller than your tank is. You might want to look into smaller types of plants that might be more appropriate for your tank size like java moss / fern, java grass, anubias v. nana, micro sword, glossotigma, sunset hygro. As for ferts, if you’re using them, don’t follow the directions on the bottle (they encourage you to use way too much so you’ll have to buy more). Next week, use one drop more than you did this week, etc, until you notice a slight algae formation, then cut back by 1-2 drops. Ferts aren’t an exact science, you more or less have to go by your plants and how they look.

More planted aquariums

A look at some of my aquascapes past and present.

1 Gallon Saltwater Aquarium and Globe Ecosystem

1 Gallon Pico Reef, 1/2 gallon sealed SPS reef tank, 19 gallon bog terrarium globe, 75 gallon planted tank with Co2 injection. Keeping ecosystems in odd containers changes the chemistry and dynamics interestingly and has a direct correlation to evaporation rates, nitrate binding or export, and temperature stabilization to name a few.

For example, a fluted vase design allows for an inner-diameter resting lid, which changes the salinity and saltcreep maintenance drastically vs any other shape. It also provides an angled surface for detritus accumulation, which is easily wiped for maintenance and this is (nitrogen) export.

A small square palmtop design, with an internal plant sub-division, becomes the first and still the only longterm sealed (non evaporating) coral reef aquarium, growing acroporid coral specimens into 3 inch tabular forums documented over a two year course.
Shape matters in pico reef design, and pico reef design matters to marine biology as a whole because it influences coral morphology, allelopathy, and new observations for science unique to hyperconcentrated niche environments.
thank you for stopping by!

I invite everyone to discuss the biology or problems associated with any aquarium care, and feel free to link your own micro reefs if you keep them.

Anyone who would like to research pico reef history can start at Reefs.Org and Reefcentral around 2002 and nano-reef.com
These forums paved the way for the explosion in popularity and are 95% of the existing documentation regarding progress of this layman’s science

It seemed interesting for all of us to share pico reef design concepts on this video, so post anything you know about them please or any reference material on the matter.

nice to meet you all and thank you for watching!

I stay active enough on this forum and in the marine and fish forums it won’t be too hard to find me so we can chat about marine biology and aquatic sciences if not here. I will also help you build and stabilize these, so hit me up in the comments if you start one.
