Answer by Emmy You named just about everything you need to start the tank. You might want to get some artificial plants for the fish to hide in though, saltwater fish can be a little skittish at first and it really improves their health if they feel safe. About the UV sterilizer, you don’t have to get one but they do help keep the water clean longer. And the external filter is fine, just keep it clean and make sure the tank is completely cycled before you add a large amount of fish. Almost any good aquarium website has directions on how to do this. I hope your tank turns out nice!!
Question by : How much lighting should I have for my saltwater aquarium? I am currently converting my 20g long planted tank into a saltwater aquarium. I am running a 2 x 31 watt t5 bulbs. One is 10,000k and the other is an Actinic. Would this be sufficient lighting to maintain sps corals since a 20 long is more shallow than a 20 tall? or would I have to upgrade my lighting fixture?

Answer by 130-142 varisty county wrestler no you should have at least 60 watts on 1 bulb. for my 30 gallon saltwater reef tank, i have the lunar aqualight, which has two 65 watt lights. in my opinion this is the best lighting system. it doesn’t matter if you have a 10k bulb because it will only make a small difference from using the Standard bulb. i suggest not buying any coral or anemone unless you buy a sufficient lighting system. its really the system strength that matters

Answer by MonicaBill You need to start at the beginning. The tank needs to recycle and then slowly add the organisms. (are you there yet?)As far as systems…I am reasoning, protein skimmer, heater, possible chiller, etc. Owning a saltwater tank is quite involved and it is a delicate ecosystem. It would be a full idea to become friendly with a well-known fish store in your area for support.

If you are planning on keeping Hard corals then MH or VHO lighting or a combination of either of them and PC. Question by anonymous: What equipment is needed for a saltwater aquarium? I have a freshwater aquarium right now and would like to switch it eventually to a small saltwater aquarium. My tank is 10 gallons so I was planning on only getting one clown fish with a starfish or shrimp. I have a heater, an out of the tank filter, and thermometer. Is a protein skimmer and an air pump too necessary? Also my tank light is quite old and doesn’t have the wattage on it, so should i assume that I would necessitate to rate the cover on my aquarium?

Answer by mimi yes a protein skimmer is necessary but……….unless you are advanced in saltwater pity don’t even try a saltwater tank with less than a 30 gal tank, 55 is really better. it is much harder to maintain stability in a small amount of water which leads to ammonia and ph spikes and since saltwater animals are so sensitive these spikes usually kill them and they are expensive and usually not vouched. too when you set up a saltwater tank, especially something that small without a protein skimmer you are going to be doing water changes and testing everyday. don’t do it until you have a bigger tank, time, and money.
