Question by Noir: Cloudy water after aquarium filter installation?
I bought a penn plax small aquarium filter yesterday it was working fine, today the water is slightly cloudy. I made sure to run it under water for a few minutes before I placed it in the tax. (It is a filter made of sponge and carbon.) Any ideas on what could be wrong?

What would i need to start a salt water aquarium with a clown fish?

Question by tiofilo75: What would i need to start a salt water aquarium with a clown fish?
Hello there. I have had fresh water fish for over 4 years now. I have gradually learned some things and am aware of water maintenance. I do weekly water changes and fish are very happy. I have been thinking about starting a salt water aquarium with just one clown fish. I have a spare 50 gallon tank with a fluval 305 filter. What would be my next step, any info would be great. Thanks.

Answer by Lela F
Your next step would be getting the 50 gallon up and running with RO water from the LFS with about 25lbs of live rock and live sand for substrate (about an inch thick maybe two). Unlike FW, SW cannot handle the other chemicals such as copper in their water (which a lot of water companies add to their water). The fact that you have 4 years experience is going to work in your favor, you already know about water changes, parameter testing, and the need for heaters and chillers. The clown (I know this because I have them) will need a temp of about 76-78. A salinity of 1.021-1.024, and 0-ammonia, 0-nitrites, and 0 to 5ppm nitrates. They are a hardy species, but will die in an unestablished tank. You must complete the cycling process before adding them, and I would give it at least six weeks if not longer. get some media from a well established tank to add to your bio cubes. But not FW bio cubes!!!!!! They will add different PH levels, and so forth to your tank. You want a PH of about 8.1 with clowns. FW has a PH of about 6.8 so that would be a disaster. When I say from an established tank I mean someone with a saltwater aquarium. Just cycle out your filter, get some LR and LS, seed the filter, use the stability and prime chemical when setting up, it will add the beneficial bacteria to your water preventing early tank death, if you just can’t wait to get that little guy but I strongly advise against it until at least eight weeks, SW is different when it comes to patience and time. You have to give it time. Also get a thermometer and hydrometer to measure salinity and temp before you add the clown, also add some inverts, like hermits, snails, things like that before adding the fish. If inverts can survive, then so can your fish. Once all your parameters read 0, your PH 8.1, calcium around 380 or 400, salinity about 1.022. and temp around 77, then add your fish, but make sure you acclimate him well, it is not like FW where you just dump them in, YOU MUST DO THIS, let the bag float for about 30 minutes or so, then open the bag and fold the edges down about four times, clip it to the side of the tank and as it floats, then add your own aquarium water an ounce at a time every ten minutes(about a shot glass) until the bag is full. Once it is, dump out half of the water and repeat the previous step until the bag is full again, now your fish is ready to be netted out. Now for mixing up the water, add the prime, stability, and instant ocean to your five gallon buckets, make sure they read what I said above, then place plates over your sand to keep it from rising also turn off your filter so that none of the sand is caught up in it. Pour in your water, once it is all added then it is time to place your live rock. Make sure you have plenty of hiding places for the little guy, and I do not know if you will be keeping a reef, but if you do get plenty of anemones. They are not necessary, but they will help if you can sustain them. I hope the best for you and hope you get your clown! Good luck! Is there a difference between salt water aquarium decorations or fresh water decor?

Question by ian k: Is there a difference between salt water aquarium decorations or fresh water decor?
I want a piece for my brackish water tank but the tag says, “use for fresh water aquarium”. Will it matter in my brackish water tank? Is something bad going to happen to the water if i put it in there?

Best answer:

Answer by thatfishchick
If is made from an inert corporeal such as certain plastics – there will be no difference and you will see no ill effects.//EDIT EDIT//I do challenge my single nay-sayer (*who I’m betting is Danielle Z) to open their sump and prove me wrong by displaying that there is not a single piece of plastic in their tank. Motor housings, pvc pipe work, acrylic constructs for overflows or the tank all (*oh, yes indeed, acrylic is a thermoplastic), etc, it’s all plastic. So, again, it depends on the materials in question and their reactivity.

Why my aquarium filter not sucking up water?

Question by Tippman: Why my aquarium filter not sucking up water?
My straining is spinning but not sucking water up. I put water half way up and still tin’t get it to serve. Any help would be appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by Zena
First try filling your aquarium all the way up, plus add water inside the filter. If that doesn’t work, take out the motor in the filter. There should be an impeller inside (the thing that spins around). They are magnetic and tin be pulled out. Pull it out and clean it. It sounds like it’s jammed with gunk.

Q&A: maroon clownfish water requirements?

Question by krissy_xo: maroon clownfish water requirements?
i bought a little maroon clownfish and will pick it up in a couple days as i need to get the tank ready. i already have aquarium salt from a company called “API : aquarium pharmaceuticals” because i had fish before, so already have that. and i asked the lady at the pet store how much of it i need to put in the water to make it suitable for the clownfish. and she said ‘however much it takes to get the level to 1.2′ so she pointed out some water testing strips. from the same company as the salt. API. the product i have is called “API 5 in 1 aquarium testing strips” it tests pH, NO2, NO3, KH and GH.now under pH which would be for the salt, the levels are only 6.0 – 9.0i read online that maroon clown fish pH levels should be between 8.1 and 8.4so what was she talking about when she said 1.2?? the nitrite(NO2 & NO3) level?you read the strip from left to right when you’re comparing the strip to the colors. it goes GH(general hardness) KH(Carbonate hardness)pHNO2 (nitrite)NO3(nitrate)if anyone knows what the test strip should look like for all 5 levels can they post the numbers it should read, please and thank you.i’m putting the fish in a 1 gallon tank for now which is plenty big for him because hes identical small. i will gradually get bigger tanks as it grows. so for a 1 gallon tank, how much salt should i put to get the pH level to what it said online, between 8.1 and 8.4?

Answer by Clint W
The 1.2 is referring to the salinity. She mean 1.02 because 1.2 would kill a fish. However as a long time saltwater tank owner I disagree , the lever should be about 1.022. You must buy a hydrometer to test salinity, a test strip wont do it. You usually need about half cup of ocean salt per gallon of water. It is my opinion that you need to do some research before setting up your aquarium………a clownfish is not the best choice here. There is a very strong chance that it will die while your tank is cycling. A chromis fish is a better choice as a first fish………..no matter what your fish store says dont use a damsel!!!!! Later on the damsel will become mean and you will want to remove it and they are a real pain in the “you know what” Go to the site listed below and get roughly help. Setting up a saltwater tank is kind of difficult and most fish stores dont have a clue what they are talking about. If you would like to speak on phone you can email me at cowboyfan1113@yahoo.com and I would be glad to help you out and get you started the right way.
