I am thinking of getting some tropical fish, but do not want to pay a huge bill for the electricity to run the heater for the tank.

Look for the electrical tag on the tank, heater and light. Multiply wattage (100W or whatever) by time used per day. Then multiply that number by the cost per Kilowatt hour (provided by your electrical company. This will give you the cost per day in cents..
note : 127 watts = .127 Kw so put watts into Kw before calculating. Obviously, multiply your cost per day by 365 to
get yearly cost. Shouldnt be more than 30$…
Energy per day = power ( watts ) x ( TIME PER DAY)
Cost per day = energy per day x cost per Kw
you would have to check but you also need a filter and a light ( the light doesn’t have to stay on more than 8-10 hours a day )
It really doesn’t cost that much I had one and when all the fish died i didn’t continue and really didn’t notice much of a difference in the eletrc bill.
check for the equipment to be used. heater, filtration, and lighting. most of them use electricity. there are actually different types of these apparatus so, they actually differ on their energy consumption. also check on how big your tank is… this might help you to decrease the consumption of electricity for a smaller tank can have an appartus with lower current requirement… bottom line, check on the filter, heater and lighting about their individual energy consumptions…

you could heat a small/medium aquarium for less than 200 watts.
Not a scientific answer, but the usage would be negligible. You have to run the heater and filter constantly, and the light 8-10 hours a day (most people do). Make sure to get a flourescent light instead of incandescent. Lasts longer, stays cooler, and cheaper to operate. When I set up my tanks, I didn’t notice any actual increase in my bill, so it must be negligible. Well worth a few pennies a day to gain the benefit of a beautiful aquarium in your home!
200-350 watts a day and yes you will pay some more for your ellectric bill

it would be negligible. i have 2 ten gallons with heaters and filters and one with lights. a 20 gallon with heater, filter, air pump, and lights. another 20 gallon with heater, filter, 2 airpumps, a heat lamp, and lights, and am setting up a 55 gallon. the bill went up no more than a couple dollars a month.
so if your getting a small aquarium with a filter and heater, you most likely will not see any difference in the monthly electric bill.
