I would lose the medicine and the tropical fish book they are not really needed to get a tank started.

Rather I would suggest a basic aquarium manual that talks about all the basic issues like the nitrogen cycle, ph balance, proper temperature, and illness diagnostics.

You should also add a heater to the list.

The test kit is right,but high pH won't kill fish living in clean water. I've kept thriving,spawning communities in fresh well water that came out of the ground with a pH of 8.3.

You should add that you need to cycle your tank when set up before adding any fish..Explain the whole nitrogen cycle..Many ppl dont do this.. It's very important! also QT any new fish.. and info about water changes..
