Tropical Aquarium Fish (Discus) Caring For Eggs

www.theSmileyFish.com Discus Fish are great parents. On this video, you can see them guarding and cleaning their eggs and waving water over them. The male (the blue colored fish)has just gotten back from foraging. These beautiful fish actually take turns caring for the eggs. When the babies hatch, the parents will produce a milk-like substance from their skin. The babies will feed on this milk-like substance for the first two to three weeks of their lives. To learn more about this extraordinary freshwater fish, check out January’s Fish-of-the-Month Post on.

Opinion on keeping discus is changing very rapidly. At a time many people believed that the only way to keep discus was in an aquarium with a low Ph. However much has changed and that is mainly to do with the amount of discus breeders out there. Many European bred discus can now thrive in Ph up to 7.5 but still require a peaceful aquarium. In short Discus are going much the same way that the Angelfish went before them and is becoming far more resilient.

If you want to keep Discus fish, do you have to keep them in a tank without any other species of tropical fish, such as Angels, Cichlids, etc?

  8. FishTankEnthusiast says:

    Hi,

Usually Discus should be kept in “species only” tanks. They require warm (82F-86F), soft water that’s of a low pH (the temp alone excludes many potential tankmates). Also, Discus should never be kept with larg and/or aggressive fish (sorry, no angels).

A few fish, including Blue Rams, can be kept with Discus. There’s plenty more to say, but I’m running out of room. So, take a look at my article on Discus found on my blog (the link to my blog is found in the youtube description above)

How many gallon is your tank? I have a 90 gallon tank and my discus just made it’s first batches of eggs. At what temp did you keep your tank at? I’ve changed it to 86 2 weeks ago and now a day ago they’re laying eggs. There’s about 112 eggs. Any advice for me is appreciated.
